Case study 1: enhanced measurement and communication of space-time utilisation
The longstanding HEFCE/National Audit Office method for assessing space utilisation is logically sound. However, many HEIs’ audit implementations are suboptimal in terms of statistical power, labour efficiency and robustness.
Also, internal communication and dissemination methods for getting the right data to the right audiences in the right forms to support decision-making are not well developed. Possibly as a result, the data collected are not always well used in estate planning and decision-making.
The case study shows how principles of statistical analysis and visual communications can be used to increase the power and decision-making value of utilisation information and engage academic audiences with issues of space-time utilisation.
